| About me Douglas Hill I have been writing ever since my grade five teacher, Joe Stortz surprised me by telling me I was a pretty good writer. That was almost sixty years ago. Joe went on to a distinguished career in insurance sales, and I proceeded to think of writing as a pretty good hobby. I have since ill-spent my life as a leader and have finally come into my own as a writer during this, a period of intense geezerhood. My interests include my best friend, best/worst critic, Flora, to whom I have been married and with whom I have lived for over forty years, our grandchildren, who currently number 3, their parents (all four) and my other son, (that means we have three kids for those keeping score) who may or may not be joining the ranks of parenthood some time in the future. Also included in my interests are all aspects of theatre (in my other life I am a playwright), carpentry, barbershop singing, painting and drawing (including cartooning), website design and management (I do this on a volunteer basis for several non-profit groups), teaching seniors about the Internet, cottaging (we have a cottage a half hour from our house, on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, very close to where the USA, Ontario and Quebec meet), Advanced Energy Healing, movies (my buddy, Gilles and I go to just about everything because our wives refuse to), eating in restaurents, attending and reviewing plays in my blog, wordcurrents. And a lot of other stuff. If you want to know more about my writing process, check out "On the process of Writing", one of my categories in wordcurrents. How to take my comments on your work First of all, the comments below apply after you have proofread your work and fixed any technical glitches (which you surely would have done before posting it in the first place -- right?) since poetry, more than anything else, is so dependent on the details that any error misleads your readers and undermines your credibility. In response to my comments, there are two things you can do: 1. Defend yourself, explain your position, define what you meant me to understand, give me the context for what you wrote. or 2. read what I have to say, ask for clarification if you need it, then a) go sulk over my inadequacies as a critic or b) totally rewrite your work as per my instructions or c) decide that what I ( and other people) have told you gives you clues about things you may have to rethink in order to set them up better; in other words, you may have to change something else to better set up what puzzled your critics. Or you may have to cut or modify what puzzled us. Or not. Comment: if there is a right answer, it is 2 c) Capice? | Recent Blog Entries Published On: 11-11-2006 10:28 PM
Blog Category: No Category Blog Tags: No Tags platinum river is my blog about wordcurrents. In it, I write bout the inspiration for the poem of the day, although I do not write about each poem. Sometimes, lately, I cannot log on, as the blogger site is not available. Not cool. The main reason I have for blogging there is to get into a blogging network, where there are links for accidental discovery. Slowly building a readership, one at a time.
